Sentient Spaces [SAP]

Transitioning from Animism, the concept of objects having human characteristics; we were introduced to sentient spaces. From the previous animation, "Life of a Rock Animated", it featured other objects in the background that were able to react to the rock that was being thrown around. Sentient environment encapsulates the concept of animism, applying it to the elements in the environment.

Examples that we looked at were "Prometheus Garden" by Bruce Bickford in 1988, The Little House and Monster House. "Prometheus Garden" features a spontaneous claymation that illustrates the growth of plants depicted with humans. The abstract movement and structures of the plants creating sentient humans demonstrate the concept of sentient spaces. In "The Little House", the house kept being bullied by neighbouring houses even though she was just trying to make friends. The house went through a lot and it eventually refurnished and moved to the city side; living peacefully alone. The final example, "Monster House" illustrates a house that is in a controlling relationship with the old man living in it. When he tries to escape with the protagonists, the house lifts itself from the ground and chases the old man.

The practical task was to make the background/environment of the initial animism animation sentient. For my animation, I made the wall react to the lightbulb.
