Study Task - SWOT

SWOT is a self analysis tool and it stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threat. This tool enables us to analyse the pros, cons, internal and external factors that affect business and our general being in our field.

Self analysis and being self critical is essential to reflect upon our own strengths and weaknesses. Completing the SWOT table has allowed me to get a clear direction of my objectives as an animator and as a person to how I can self improve upon my weaknesses.

My current goal going forward is to push myself to be more comfortable with drawing digitally and familiarising myself with both digital softwares like Adobe Premier, Photoshop and Animate and TV Paint in the future.

Setting a weekly goal to post some practice pieces on my social media account is also a good start to get my social presence up. At the same time, that will ease me into a habit of drawing more and helping myself familiarise with more softwares and drawing skills. Slowly honing them to where I want them to be.

Study Task - Working Freelance/Self Employment

This week, we learned about freelancing as an animator.

Prior to this week, we had to calculate our annual expenses, using that I will then judge how much annual income I will require if I were to be a freelancer.

My annual spending is estimated to be £12,316. If I were to freelance I would like to earn at least 50% more than what I spend as savings. Therefore working freelance ideally I would want to earn at least £18,000 annually

Using a site called 'Your Rate', I inputted my choice of annual rate, working hours per week and weeks off per year.

Annual Rate & Working Hours

My Rates

After calculating my rates, my rates would be £19 per hour or £150 per day. This would be a good start up cost as the annual income of £18,000 allowing me to cover my annual expense of £12,316. This leaves £5,684 as savings.

Studio Brief 3 - Talk the Talk [Bamboo Studios]

In this brief, we had to form a group of 4 to create a hypothetical studio and the start up plan. The plan is to have each member of the start up studio recognise their strengths, roles and responsibilities and through that plan and promote our unique selling point. We will also have to think about finance, cost of work and income we would want to earn to maintain the studio.

Forming a trio with Ruari and Kumail, we each worked on different parts of the studio. I worked on the finance and sorted out our necessities for start up, such as cost of equipment, softwares and bills. Alongside with the costs of a studio space as our work environment and cost of our work.
I also stated my skills, role responsibilities as my contribution to the studio group.

Calculating the costs into two separate aspects, I separated the cost of necessities and equipments and created a table illustrating the type of item, quantity, payment; monthly or one time payment and cost.

Cost of Necessities and Equipment [Slide]

The cost of the equipments and softwares are gathered from their respective sites; Cintiq 22 Hd from the Wacom site and the Windows 10 desktop from Microsoft. Adobe cloud from Adobe and TV Paint from TV Paint.

The choice of the equipments and softwares are based off of the models the university provides as those are sufficient for professional work.

Gathering the costs of electric and internet bills from infographics, I also got an average cost of a studio office space in Leeds through browsing through various office sites in Leeds.

With all that calculated, the total cost of the start up year would be a total of £15,054.81 as equipments such as Wacom Cintiqs, Desktops and TV Paint are one time purchases. After the start up year, the annual cost is then decreased to £8004.84.

Cost of Work and Salary [Slide]

The minimum wage in UK is £7.83. Using that as our basis, we decided our hourly rate would be around double of the minimum wage; £15.

Working from 9am - 5pm from Monday to Fridays, that is a 40 hours of work per week. With that, our weekly income per person would be £600.

Making our monthly gain a total of £2400 and our annual income £28,800. As a collective we would earn a  total of £86,400.

However that is the income we would have stand alone without factoring in the aforementioned costs of necessities and equipments.

Factoring those into the income, we would earn a total of £71,345.19 for the start up year, and £78,395.16 for the following.

We would each earn a total of £26,131.72 yearly after the start up year.

Study Task - So Pro

Social Media

Currently, I have four social media accounts across different platforms. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Art Station. The main social media platforms I use to promote my art are mainly Instagram and Art Station. Whereas Facebook and YouTube are more casual and personal.

However I would want to potentially develop my YouTube into a platform where I can share my fully completed and developed personal projects of animations instead of Instagram due to the time limit.

Art Station Profile

Instagram Profile

Art Station is more demanding and requires more professional portfolios and experience. Therefore Instagram would be a better choice for now to promote my work and gain commissions. However Art Station would be a good alternative to display my more professional and developed work in the future to build up my portfolio.

As of now, I would want to focus on Instagram and update a lot more of my work on my page as the last post was made last year. I would use Instagram as a stepping stone for now to post my development and WIP work and projects.

My goal is to post at least once a month. The work should show development and what I'm interested in making/developing in the future.

Study Task - How much you do you need?

Cost of Living

In this task we had to calculate our annual expenses as students living in the UK. After completing the spreadsheet calculating the annual cost, my estimate annual cost came up to £12,316.

Analysing what I spend, my expenses out of the necessities are mainly subscription based such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Audible and clothes.

Study Task - CopyShop

Copyright in the UK is automatically applied as long as the material and work is produced by you. As for the blog itself, I will add a "©Jason Lam, 2020" to the footer of each blog. Moreover for my work that I post on social media, I will add either signatures or watermarks to the work so that it won't be copyrighted or stolen by others.

As the rules only apply to UK, if I were to work or publish my work globally, I will ensure that my instagram page will have my contacts; professional email and phone contact on it so people that want to use my works can contact me. Moreover I will also have a minor description on each post that I make to ensure that people that want to enquire me about using the works can contact me via email or phone.

Study Task - Networking: Who, what, when, where and how?

In this study task, we aim to identify festivals, competitions, volunteering opportunities, premieres and openings where we can have a chance to gain potential experience and connections from. Moreover we were tasked to set up a Linkedln account to help us network with people in the Animation industry.

1) MAF [Manchester Animation Festival]
  • Although there is an entry fee, Manchester Animation Festival is a great way to indulge in various animation shorts that are produced by various creators
  • Good networking opportunity as I will be able to connect to both students that attend as well as creators that showcase their work during the festival
  • There is no current date scheduled for this festival in 2020

2) KINOFILM Manchester International Short Film and Animation Festival

  • There will be a fee of £25 to enter the festival
  • This festival will be held at Manchester and all showcase 300 shorts selected from 1000 submissions
  • This festival lasts for 9 days and will be held at 4 different venues, meaning that there will be more places and opportunities to network with a lot more creators as the length of this event is extensive
  • They feature films that are produced by students and professionals this will allow me to gain potential exposure amongst professional film producers that are featured in the festival

3) Animafest ZAGREB

  • There is no entry free and the festival will be held on the 8th of June to the 13th
  • The festival features various categories of films from animated shorts, children shorts to experimental and even site-specific VR, introducing a wide variety of animation and short films
  • Potentially network to a wide range of different type of creators which can potentially be beneficial to my self projects

  • This opportunity will allow me to network with people who produce VFX, special effects and maybe connect with some that are working for gaming industries

5) Literally Short Film Festival

  • This animation festival has an entry fee from $35 - $65 [USD] and will be between the 3rd and the 7th of June

7) Hiroshima International Animation Festival

  • An Animation festival based in Japan, Hiroshima, the submission deadline for this festival is on the 1st of April 2020 and the festival will be held from 20th to 24th of August.
  • The purpose of this festival is to pursue mutual international understanding and internal peace; this would definitely be what I could potentially pursue as both music and animation is a universal language that can definitely promote a narrative of peace and international interactions.
  • This festival also offers spaces for promotion and exchange of ideas between animation professionals at "Nexus Point" and students at "_Frame in". This festival will allow me to gain tremendous amount of insight in the animation industry internationally.
