[30/1/2020]
In this module, we were tasked to participate in a competition based brief. As we will not be working directly with clients, we are to plan the project around the given brief by either YCN or D&AD; YCN being a learning network and D&AD is a charity. Several brands are represented under the organisations and each brief given by each brand are different. There were a few brands that sparked interest; Wrap, Connect4Climate, Durex and Barcleys.
In the end, I chose Burger King as the project I would want to focus on as Burger King's brief was more flexible therefore allowed more creative direction of the type of animation and narrative that could be told. I will be working with Kumail and Ruari on this group project.
Rereading the brief, we then analysed that requirements and discussed the type of narrative and direction we would want our project to head towards. Essentially, the brief is to create an advert promoting their delivery app and make it appealing to the market of 18-24 year olds.
The idea that we came up with was heavily inspired by Nissin's Chicken Ramen commercial. As the target range is between 18-24, we want to include a lot of 'action' scenes with exaggerated impact frames. The story will be simple and will feature two main characters. A teenager who ordered Burger King, and the King himself. The king will be depicted as a hulking man with a tiny crown holding the order. He will trek through various obstacles to get to the destination within the time limit displayed on the orderers' app. Arriving right on the dot, the food will be delivered on time with the food still being steaming hot.
The set task as of now will be to create some character designs and complete a rough storyboard for the animation to get a rough idea of the sequence of the narrative.
Mood Board
Concept Revamp
After discussing with the team. We decided to change the narrative of the story a little as the idea of having a whole redesign of the original mascot will not be a good idea if we were to promote the brand of Burger King.
The new idea consists of three different shorts that compile into one giant narrative. Each short will demonstrate how the King will get through obstacles to his destination in a more realistic and fun manner. The style of the animation would still be the same just a lot more catered towards the concept of delivery.
Our Pitch
Later into the week, we had to prepare our pitch to present our idea to the class. We compiled our mood boards, initial character designs and story board to illustrate our narrative and reason as to how and why we want to depict these aspects in our animation promotional short for Burger King.
I worked on the research aspect of the pitch and I researched on our prior discussed menu items, as well as to our platforms which we will cater our animation pitch towards.
I found that the most famous menu items in Burger King are the Whopper being first, followed by the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. As for the third menu item that we would include in our animation short, we would also include a vegetarian Burger called the Rebel Whopper. The reasoning for this is because vegetarianism is a growing demographic for teenagers within the age group of the brief demographic, 18-24 therefore catering to a wider range of audience.
Researching into the platform aspect, it was clear that YouTube, Instagram and Facebook were the top three main platforms that young adults spend time on most. Therefore our format of the animation short will feature three shorts; each illustrating different delivery scenarios featuring the King overcoming them, whilst featuring different menu items in each short. The reason for this is to make them short and direct to the point, moreover formatting them separately will allow them to be utilised in a more flexible manner for social media promotional purposes.
Plans for the following week
After the pitch, we planned on our next steps and we agreed to have our scene storyboard completed by this week.

Brief Review
As we were reviewing the D&AD brief, we decided to change our idea once more to illustrate more of what the brief required, to demonstrate the use of the app.
Our initial idea was more dramatic and explosive, but we did not entirely consider much about the use of the app but more so only about the delivery aspect of the brief.
Concept Revamp [Final]
Working on the storyboard, we each planned out different scenarios which will be able to demonstrate the utility of the Burger King app in various weather conditions to illustrate how even in a bad day, Burger King will make the day better.
Keeping the idea that we are allocating our advertisement towards social media platforms, we will keep each of our scenarios short and impactful. By doing so our team has decided that each of us will come up with a scenario that would demonstrate the use of the Burger King app at different inconvenient scenarios.
Ideas
Traffic // Raining // Snowing // Late at night
I chose to work on the Raining aspect.
Working on the storyboard, I really wanted to capture the dramatic and exaggerated aspect of the "Nissin Cup Noodle Ramen" advert as it was impactful.
Using that as my basis, I created a storyboard with one impactful scene which illustrates the transformation sequence of the Burger King character himself.
Prompt [storyboard]
In a rainy day, the King collects his order ready to deliver to his costumer.
Before delivering the order, he looks out to see a child crying due to the rain. I
Determined, the King decides it's time for the day to brighten up.
In one motion, he transforms and runs through the rain in full force; causing the skies to split revealing sunshine upon all.

What Went Well:
- Created a short that I am proud of and can work with before the deadline of March 20th
- I can experiment with impact frames and transformation scenes through this process
Plans for the following week:
- Get the animatic done and start working on the animation!
[17/2/2020]
This week we focussed primarily on the animatic of the storyboard. Gathering each of our completed storyboards, Rauri compiled them into one video to gage the timing of the scenes and the animation short.
Animatic
As we were happy with the timing, we decide to start with each of our own scenes then to animate the beginning and end collaboratively.
Changes:
As we have around a month before the deadline, our module leader Matt emphasised on the fact that the D&AD brief for Burger King is a design challenge and that not a full animation short has to be produced. Moreover suggested that we keep our scenes simple and short as the judges of the competition focus more on the design aspect as to the short itself.
After that, we changed our plans and storyboard as a whole. Removing unnecessary scenes and animating the scenes where we feel would bring out our design choice and aspect of the King being able to deliver no matter the difficulty and making the customers day brighter.
With that as our new goal we changed our storyboards, intertwining the begging and end into our short as a whole.
I cut down a little in my scene only focussing primary on the transformation sequence and the King making the day brighter for all whilst Rauri will implement the King receiving the order and Kumail will implement the costumer receiving the order respectively in their scenes.
Animatic [My new edited short]
What went well
- New changes make the short more feasible and simple and still is able to get our design point across with our short
Plans for the following week
- Get started on the new planned animatic
[24/2/2020]
For my first scene, I worked on the transformation scene as that is the most time consuming aspect.
Looking into impact frames, I decided to implement them in the transformation scene to make it more dramatic and exaggerated that is hugely inspired by the Nissin Cup Ramen commercial during research.
Transformation Animation [Line]
What Went Well:
- Background was quick and easy to complete as it was just a gradient from gloomy to blue skies
- Impact frames were surprisingly effective and works well with the transformation sequence
Improvements:
- The transformed version lacks intimidation, sense of power; try to fix that through the colouring
Plans for following week:
- Try to finish colouring this scene
- Work on the background for the second scene
[16/3/2020]
PROGRESS DELAYED
Due to the pandemic outbreak, the deadline of the competition has been delayed till 6th of May instead of the 20th of March. Moreover with the whole situation of the pandemic, plans have been pushed back and the progressed has been delayed until I get my situation sorted.
[30/3/2020]
Putting the transformation sequence on hold, I worked on the background of the second scene.
Street Line Art [Background]
With the second scene background completed, I went back to colouring and completing the first scene.
[16/4/2020]
Colouring the first scene was a challenge, especially with the transformed Kinig frames. As I had to achieve something in colouring that made the King more menacing and powerful, I included particular shading aspects to the face to make it more toned and serious.
Transformation Animation [Coloured]
After adding the colours, the outcome was great as the particular style of shading was able to portray the powerful and tough aesthetic of the King.
However even with the transformation and the background changing, I still feel as if it was lacking some effects to illustrate the rain and the sunshine.
Plans for the following week
- Finish adding effects to the scene
- Finish the second scene
[30/4/2020]
Continuing from the previous week, I added a raining effect and a sunshine effect onto the first scene. This solidified the concept of how the King is able to make the day brighter from his transformation.
Transformation Animation [With Effects]
After finishing the first scene, I worked on the second scene.
Opening with the King in a running pose, I reused the rain effect from the first scene to depict his pre-transformation state. Then impact frames were used to depict the swift and robust movement from his post-transformed state.
The ground shake from his movement and transition to the sky was a good segue to the end card promoting Burger King and their delivery service.
King's Rush [Final]
To finish off, I combined both of the scenes together. However the issue was that both includes a pre-transformation version of the King which repeats if it was simply combined.
To solve that issue and to make the short more coherent, I had to edit and cut the beginning of the second scene, where the king is in the running pose to the very beginning, allowing that to segue into the transformation, finally to the run.
Burger King Rainy Days [Animation Short]
After completing my section, we as a group combined our shorts together and make a slide presentation for the competition.
Burger King Delivery Promotion [Animation Short]
Each short in concept demonstrates different concepts.
The first one depicts a normal delivery scenario where the customer orders their food through the delivery app and the King delivers.
The second short depicts the King getting the food from Burger King then travelling his way through traffic to delivery the food.
The third short demonstrates how Burger King is able to delivery the food fast and without problem, always making your day brighter.
Combined, each short can be utilised by itself to commercialise the application and Burger King itself, making it social media friendly with each being no longer than 10 seconds whilst selling the feature.
