Study Task 10 [PP1] - Showreel Time

This is the showreel compiled. In includes early work of the year, from my very first animated task to the more recent ones. I aim to illustrate a range of animations which differ in quality to encompass what I've learned and developed in this year.

Study Task 9 - Animatics and Sound

In this task, we had to create an Animatic using our story board. An animatic a rough draft of our final animation. It enables the audience to understand the actions of both characters and environment without having anything necessarily animated. The animatic also should be timed out, giving a rough estimate of the length of each scene/action.

I experimented with two styles. One purely with sound effects and a background ambience and the other with music and no sound effects. I tired combining the both, however there was too much audio which overpowers the visual of the animation.

Animatic with Sound Effects

The sound effects were all gathered form both YouTube sound effects and Freesound. The result was quite nice, especially footstep sound effects of both the protagonist and antagonist. The wet sound of the mud and footsteps paired together creates a nice illusion of the texture of the floor. Though it has it's strengths, the sound effects for the chains sounds a bit off; it doesn't blend well with the background ambience making it quite jarring. Moreover sound effects such as impact and 'energy' effects were difficult to implement so those were gathered from existing fight scenes from other animations; via Dragonball.

Animatic with Music

The music I picked for the animatic is a song called "The Story Unfolds" from a strategy RPG game called Sdorica - Sunset by Rayark. The reason I chose this song was because of the whole mood it creates. The beginning of the song is timid and soft, which fits nicely with the flash back sequence. The gradual build up of the song also fits with the animatic and the story of the animation itself, peaking at the fight scene at end, eventually having Zeta and Delta clash, ending in Zeta's victory.

As for now, I still haven't decided whether to use the sound effect version as my final or the music version as both has it's strengths and weaknesses.
